Here we share some of the best mobile Apps & Services for making your Trips easer and enhancing the experience. All of these Apps are used by the team at Plan It For Me.
We will never recommend any app or product that we haven't used ourselves!
There are so many different types and categories to Travel Apps & Services to choose from. For this reason we have broken these into various sections.
Please note that this site and your travel pack may contain affiliate links. We only recommend products that we believe in and use ourselves, we wanted to let you know that may receive a small commission from any purchases you make. Don’t worry, you won’t pay any extra – sometimes you might even get a tasty discount. It’s a win for us and a win for you too!
We recommend that you download the App of the Airline you are travelling with. This allows you to get live updates and notifications relating to your flight, as well as allowing you to access and download your boarding passes*.
We also recommend this, as when travelling, Airlines (Not Budget Airlines) will often give you offers for or the option to upgrade travel class for discount prices (Eg: Economy Class to Business Class). This usually means that they have unsold seats in the other classes of travel, or they have high demand for seats/passengers on standby for seats in your class.
For Short-haul flights, often for as low as £50, for Long-Haul flights in some instances for as low as £130.
Other Airlines will send you an email inviting you to bid for what you would be willing to pay for an upgrade. We have had success in the past with offering the minimum bid (bid amount usually entered using a slider to indicate how much you are willing to pay [Don’t worry, you only pay if your bid is successful]), however it never hurts to bid £12-£20 above the minimum bid to increase your chances!
It is also worth sighing up to the Airline Loyalty Programmes, such as BA: Executive Club , KLM: Flying Blue or Lufthansa: Miles and More. Not only will you accrue airmiles you can you to get discounts on, or even pay for future flights, but it also increases your chances of an upgrade.
*Please note that not all airports support Mobile Boarding Passes. Where this is the case, if you have checked-in online, you will be issued with a paper boarding pass at the airport.
If your trip is booked through a Tour Operator (Eg: TUI / Jet2), you should download their app. This will give you access to all of your Transport and accommodation information, as well as access to services, your Holiday Rep, and support while you are abroad.
This one is a bit different. And also free. When you sign up for a free account and link it to your email account, it collates all of your Hotel / Accommodation, Flight, Car Rental and Train ticket bookings in one place and groups them by trip date.
Particularly useful if you have a longer trip with a lot of moving parts.
You may never look at Travel Money the same way again. Wise started life as TransferWise in 2011 by two friends from Estonia who, working in London, were always looking for cheaper ways to send money back home to Estonia (International Money Transfers).
We at Plan It For Me have been using the Wise App for Years, and is a trusty, hassle free, and more importantly, Cheap way to convert and send money, as well as make payments in foreign currency.
Richard started using the service in 2016 while working in Dublin. Being paid in Euros, he used it to convert and send money back to the UK every month to pay his (GPB) mortgage in Scotland. You simply select the amount you want to transfer from the source currency, and the app instantly shows you the amount that will be sent to the requested account in the destination currency, along with the fixed fee for the conversion rate/transaction (These fees are always considerably lower than your bank of other foreign exchange providers).
Fast forward a few years, and Wise launched the Wise Card account. A similar concept to older style pre-loaded currency cards, but with huge differences and benefits.
With the Wise card, you never have to worry about exchange rate markups, or high transaction fees when you spend abroad. You get access to 40+ different currencies, and a service that is ready to use immediately.
Once you sign up, You simply add the amount of money you want to, to your base currency of choice (For us it is £GBP) account.
Select the Currency you want to use (eg: EUR), and the app instantly creates a basic bank account in that currency for you.
From your base currency account, you then select to convert some or all of the funds you have available to the new currency. The app shows you the exchange rate, how much you will receive, and like the international money transfers, the fee you pay.
Now – The fee you pay is the important bit. Say for Example your fee is £2. That is the only exchange fee you are going to pay, unlike your bank who will charge you a fee, and offer you a (less that great) exchange rate every time you tap your card.
Use your Wise Card instead of your bank card while you are travelling, ‘Tap’ to pay like a local and withdraw money from local ATM’s at no additional cost (You pay only a super-low fee on withdrawals from ATM’s after the first £200 of withdrawals from an ATM).
The best bit is – Wise Card offers you access to 40+ different currencies, and Its available to use as soon as your account is set up, via a Virtual card that can be added to Apple Pay or Google Pay Instantly, as well as having a physical card sent to you. We have also found the Wise Card to be more reliable than competitors like Revolut.
Richard spends a lot of time working in Germany, and uses his Wise card on a monthly basis, saving himself a small fortune in bank fees. This is a service he recommends to family and friends frequently, and is how the rest of us at Plan It For Me started using it (Seriously, once you get him started, he doesn’t shut up about it!).
If you too want to take advantage of this, you can open a Wise Account here:
Wise also offer a referral programme to new and existing customers. Wise will give you £75 for every 3 friends or family you refer, who spend over £100 each on their card. If your family or friends like to travel as much as we do, it’s easy money!
XE.com is free to use currency conversion app, that gives you the current market conversion rate. Great for figuring out the real cost of train tickets, holiday purchases and restaurant bills. Its free to use for Currency conversions.
These are the two apps we book all of our personal tours and excursions through. We cannot recommend them enough, and have had nothing but wonderful experiences with them. The work with local guides and companies in each location, making sure the money you spend goes back to the communities the guides live in and serve.
Get Your Guide offers some of the best tours and excursions for pretty much every location around the world. If it exists, they go there.
The companies they work with have friendly, deeply knowledgeable guides that are some times comedian's in their own right! (Mohammed Yaya in Luxor literally made my trip!).
Their trips usually include transport (Meeting Points, collection, drop off), Guided and self-guided options and much more. This allows you to book the trip and excursion to suit your needs.
Use the app to research, book and manage your trips and excursions, make changes, and add the ticket to your Apple Wallet / Google Passbook.
Viator also offers some of the best tours and excursions for pretty much every location around the world at prices to suit all budgets. Their company motto is 'Do more with Viator', which ties in perfectly with our "See More" mantra.
Their trips include transport (Meeting Points, collection, drop off), Guided and self-guided options and much more. This allows you to book the trip and excursion to suit your needs.
Use the app to research, book and manage your trips and excursions, make changes, and add the ticket to your Apple Wallet / Google Passbook.
With Viator you also earn monetary rewards to use on future bookings!
We have been using this one for years. We never go on a longer or multi-destination trip without it, and it has saved us literally THOUSANDS in international roaming fees. For us this is an essential for multi-destination & multi-country trips!

Saily by the team behind NordVPN, provides some of the best eSIM plans for International Travel, covering 180 destinations.
This service is particularly useful when you are staying in a single location (Richard used this in the Dominican Republic in September 2024, and Liam in South Korea & Taiwan in July 24), as you will need a new plan if you switch country.
Fast, Affordable & Effortless. Saily will save you a fortune compared to your network providers roaming packages (If they work at all - We're Looking at you EE!).
We thoroughly recommend downloading and using Google Maps. Its free to use, and a really useful and versatile tool. You can use the app to find you way, find local transport options, find local Convenience Stores, Pharmacies, Super Markets, Restaurants, Cafes, Bars and Clubs. When you are out and about exploring, If you spot something that interests you, you can add a bookmark so you can return there later.
Google maps is great for using and accessing your digital sightseeing map (Custom, Bespoke & Explorer Packages). You can follow your route and navigate from sight to sight easily, and in real time.
While we primarily use good maps, in some areas of the world, other Map applications are better for navigation/Transportation and route Planning. Yandex Maps is one of these.
Yandex is particularly useful in the Russian speaking world (Former USSR / Central & North East Asian countries, such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan. Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Mongolia).
Google Translate is really useful for more the complicated linguistic situations.
As well as text entry to translate what you want to say into over 200 languages, it also as has the Camera option for translating menus, form and signs and signs, simply by selecting the source language and taking a picture.
One of the really useful tools is Conversation mode, where you speak to Google Translate, and it will translate to the local language, and in many instances, will sat the response back in the selected language. On the opposite side, the other person and speak to Google Translate and the tool will convert their speech into English. (When you open Conversation mode, you can click on the “Wave” Icon to show to the person you want to talk to, so show them the tool you want to use, and also explain how it works, then use the Microphone buttons to take turns talking to each other in your own language).
Deepl is a similar in function and capability to Google Translate. While it has fewer languages available, we have found it to have more accurate for some languages, as well as providing alternative translations of the same phrase - Particularly useful if you dont have a full understanding of the context in which it is being used.
NordVPN is a service that protects your internet connection & Privacy online. VPNs create an encrypted tunnel for your data, protect your online identity by hiding your IP address, and allow you to use public Wi-Fi hotspots safely.
We have been using this service for years, and it is also particularly useful when travelling.
NordVPN protects your laptop, tablet and phone while travelling, but most importantly, by selecting a server in your home country, you will also potentially be able to access your home region streaming sites, rather than just their local offerings.
Particularly good if you started watching a series before you leave, and you get to your destination and realise that its not available in that Region!
This is an everyday service we use, especially when travelling for work & pleasure. Its multi device format means you have all of your bases covered.
NordVPN was rated the best service for speed and security in 2024.
Not to mention its one of the cheapest on the market!
Booking.com is our go-to for booking accommodation for our trips. You can find everything from Hostels, Hotels, Apartments, Houses, Guesthouses and Homestays.
This is one of the most effective tools we have found for targeting your stay, allowing you to search by neighbourhoods in each city, letting you know the proximity to the centre, as well as user reviews of each of the properties.
You can view by price, and filter your accommodation down by your requirements eg: Hotels Only, Gym, Pet Friendly to name but a few. You can also make changes from the App, as well as notifying your accommodation of your arrival time – Particularly useful for those late night/early morning arrivals.
We recommend signing up for a Free Membership, as the Genius Programme gets you discounts on your stay, free breakfast options, discounted room upgrades and much more. The programme has 3 levels. You move between them by booking with them. The more you book, the more you move up. By Level 3, you average around 20% savings.
You can also access all of your accommodation bookings and make changes from the app.
Hostelworld is our go-to app for viewing and booking Hostels while backpacking. While some people aren't keen on the idea of Hostels they are a great way to meet people, especially if travelling on your own.
Hostels aren't all 16 bed mixed Dorms. Many are considerably smaller, and many have private rooms with private bathrooms available.
With Global reach this makes it the perfect app for the job. View Hostels, Pictures, Ratings, but also view the profiles of fellow travellers who will be there. You can also join your hostel's chat up to 14 days before your arrival to meet and get hints and trips for your location before you arrive.
The Hostelworld App also allows you to join "Link Ups", events organised by fellow travellers, such as walking tours, Dune surfing, Bike tours and Surfing lessons to name but a few.
And obviously the core functionality of the App - Access and manage all of your bookings in the one place.
AirBnB has been around for a while, and while not always the cheapest option for Solo travellers, we have found it particularly useful for reducing the cost for groups of people who want to stay together. Its also a great option for finding quirkier places to stay... Like a Castle or a Tree House!
It is also a great option for when you are staying in a single location for 4+ days, as you get the feeling of having a home away from home.
An added benefit of renting an AirBnB is the ability to cook for your self if you are budget conscious, or simply tired of eating in restaurants after a few days. The added bonus is that you usually also get access to the on-site laundry facilities!
Trivago is another great hotel booking app. Different sites have different deals at different times, so the accommodation you want may be unavailable on one site, but available on another - A great tool if you are looking to book the same accommodation as friends who booked separately or may have started their trip before you.
Trivago is slightly different in that rather then being an a pure booking provider, the compare hotel hotel prices from 100's of sites, and provide a best price guarantee.
Expedia is a good all-rounder for booking every aspect of your Trip. You can search and book Accommodation, Flights, Holiday Packages, Car Rentals and more.
Google Flights is one of the best sites for finding the cheapest deals on flights.
Set your departure airport and your desired destination and your preferred travel dates and instantly search hundreds of airlines for the best prices and routes.
Also a good idea to Save a shortcut to the site on your phone.
SkyScanner is another of the best sites for finding the cheapest deals on flights.
Set your departure airport and your desired destination and your preferred travel dates and instantly search hundreds of airlines for the best prices and routes.
This one is fairly self-explanatory. Taxi/Ride sharing app which operates on 70 countries globally. Usually also substantially cheaper than local taxi companies and local app providers.
Particularly useful when you are travelling, and also for solo travellers, as you can track your journey in real time, and make sure the driver is following the Uber route, and taking you where you want to go.
Same idea as Uber, and tends to operate in cities alongside Uber, or in the cities Uber doesn’t operate in. We have also found bolt to be cheaper in several European cities than Uber, particularly when Uber are using surge pricing.
They operate in Central & Eastern Europe, the Caucuses and African countries, as well as a few Latin American countries.
Bolt has the added feature of providing e-bikes and e-scooters in several European cities. The service operates on a “Pay as you Go” basis, so no subscriptions to worry about. These are particularly useful for getting from A to B to C while on the go. Simply open the app, scan the QR Code, and off you go.
Similar to Bolt, Lime provides e-bikes and e-scooters in several European and North and Latin American countries. The service operates on a “Pay as you Go” basis, so no subscriptions to worry about. These are particularly useful for getting from A to B to C while on the go. Simply open the app, scan the QR Code, and off you go.
FREENOW is a Taxi App with the largest vehicle choice for customers across 150 European Cities ( In Ireland, France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy & Greece).
In some Countries Taxi fares are set by a metered fares (Such as Ireland), FREENOW operates alongside Uber and is exactly the same price, but with a larger fleet of available drivers.
